England's largest lake, and one of the easier places in the country to get on it legally. Ferry Nab at Bowness is a council-run launch where an untrailered, unpowered craft carried to the water costs nothing — paddleboards and the like are explicitly permitted, and only motorised craft need registering. Showers, toilets and hot food on site, open daily except Christmas, and you pay before launching. A 10 knot limit keeps the lake calm. It is a slipway, so a run start.
