Getting thereNorth Devon coast, about 1.5 hours northwest of Exeter International Airport (EXT) via the A39 Atlantic Highway. A car is mandatory for heavy gear; a large paid municipal lot behind the pebble ridge barrier. The wide sandy beach gives direct, clean entry.
HazardsA genuinely large tidal range here, confirmed directly against local tide-chart data rather than the extreme regional figure applied out of context: typical daily swings run around 4.5-6.5m (average high tide 6.3m), not the 8-10m sometimes quoted for the Bristol Channel as a whole โ that extreme applies further up-channel toward Cardiff/Avonmouth, not here specifically. Still, real power at high tide against the sharp pebble ridge, and avoiding riding within two hours of high tide matters given how little sand remains for safe landing then.
Best time of dayTwo hours around low-to-mid tide, exposing an ultra-wide, flat sandy arena and softening the pebble ridge shorebreak. Afternoon sessions get a boost when SW winds are accelerated by the Bristol Channel's thermal funneling.
