Getting therePoole, Dorset, about 2 hours south of London via the M3 and A31. A car is necessary; paid roadside parking along the Sandbanks peninsula (Banks Road) is highly competitive. The shallow zone known as 'The Duck Pond' sits directly inside the peninsula harbor wall.
HazardsA genuine legal requirement, confirmed directly against Poole Harbour Commissioners' own published rules: every kitesurfer needs an annual Kite Surfing Permit (about £20, applied for online) to use the harbor at all, requiring 3rd-party liability insurance and a self-rescue competency declaration — spot checks are actively carried out, and violations can bring a fine up to £2,500 plus costs. Students of BKSA-registered schools under direct instructor supervision are exempt from needing their own permit. Kiting within 50m of the harbour wall is strictly prohibited, and the Duck Pond itself is a tight zone bordered by a busy road wall, stone groynes, and heavy windsurfer traffic — stay well clear of the active shipping channels.
