Getting thereHautes-Alpes region, about 2.5 hours north of Marseille Marignane Airport (MRS) via the A51. A car is completely necessary for the mountainous shoreline; paid parking near the Savines-le-Lac bridge or Baie de Saint-Michel. The grassy banks at Baie de Saint-Michel are the primary access.
HazardsImmediate deep-water drop-offs and a hard clay bottom that gets slippery during launches. Local thermal funneling drives genuinely fierce, turbulent, gusty wind close to the steep mountain walls — no rescue boat infrastructure here.
Best time of dayAfternoon, May-September, when the mountain thermal engine drives steady western wind through the valley passes like clockwork. On by around 1pm, blowing fiercely until sunset — late afternoon is peak.
