Getting thereAbout 35 minutes north of Perpignan Airport (PGF) or 1 hour south of Montpellier (MPL). A car is required for the unpaved sand tracks of La Franqui beach; free seasonal parking directly on the packed sand behind the shore. Les Coussoules, north of the main resort promenade, is the primary access.
HazardsThe Tramontane (NW) genuinely blows offshore here, confirmed directly against multiple local sources, not assumed — often screaming over 35-40kt. This wind comes straight off the land, smoothing the water but making it genuinely dangerous without support; true beginners should stick to the sheltered lagoon (étang) or go through a school with boat assistance rather than ride the open sea during hard Tramontane cycles.
Best time of dayMorning through early afternoon, when the Tramontane is cleanest and most stable. Check local wind alerts before heading out — conditions can quickly exceed what's manageable on standard small kite or wing sizes.
