Getting thereAbout 1h15 south of Hermosillo Airport (HMO), or a 5-hour drive south of the Arizona border via Mexico Federal Highway 15. A car is essential; free parking directly on the dirt flats behind Playa Los Algodones. The wide sandy strip near the Soggy Peso beach bar is the best entry.
HazardsLocalized rocky reef patches sit on the western boundary, with a moderate shorebreak at high tide. Wind can turn strongly cross-offshore near the surrounding volcanic peaks (Cerro Tetakawi) — flat water, but a real drifting hazard into the open Sea of Cortez.
Best time of dayAfternoon, November-April, when regional NW winds get thermally accelerated along the Sonoran coastline. Usually building after 1pm for a steady cross-onshore breeze that clears the nearshore surf line.
