Getting thereNorthern Sea of Cortez, about a 3.5-hour drive south of Phoenix or Tucson via AZ-85 and Mexico Route 8. A car is necessary; free parking along the sand tracks at Sandy Beach or Las Conchas. Wide sand flats in front of the major beach resorts give the primary access.
HazardsA genuinely large tidal range here, confirmed directly against real tide-chart data rather than a single number: a typical day swings around 2.5-3m, but spring tides can reach 6m or more — exposing reef shelves, sharp rocks, and shallow sandbanks at the lowest lows. Check the actual tide chart for your dates rather than assuming a fixed range, and time launches for mid-to-high tide to protect your gear. Watch for strong lateral current near the inlets too.
