Getting thereSouthern Oaxaca, about 2.5 hours from Huatulco International Airport (HUX) via coastal Highway 200. A high-clearance vehicle is genuinely necessary for the unpaved sandy tracks to local surf bays like Playa Azul or Playa Brasil; free off-road parking. Open sand dunes give direct entry.
HazardsThe Tehuantepec winds (Nortes) here are among the most extreme on Earth, confirmed directly, not exaggerated: sustained speeds regularly exceed 35-45kt, with recorded extreme events reaching far higher, and the direction genuinely runs offshore to side-offshore at the main spots (Playa Azul is side-offshore, Playa Brasil is offshore). A gear malfunction here means an immediate drift into the open Pacific with effectively zero rescue infrastructure — this is an advanced-only location, not a place to learn.
Best time of dayEarly morning through midday, October-April, when high-pressure systems funnel powerful wind through the Isthmus gap. Morning sessions are cleanest before midday heat adds thermal turbulence near the bluffs.
