Getting thereFly into Blaise Diagne International (DSS) in Dakar, then a 4-5 hour drive north via toll highway and N2 to Saint-Louis. A car is necessary; the main access point is the Hydrobase beach area on the Langue de Barbarie peninsula, with free parking along sand roads behind the beachfront surf camps.
HazardsThe ocean side has powerful shorebreak and strong rip currents that can overwhelm inexperienced riders quickly. Stay inside the protected Langue de Barbarie lagoon if less experienced, watching for shallow sandbanks at low tide and local fishing boat traffic (pirogues) in the river channels.
Best time of dayAfternoon, February-June, once thermal trade winds build to their daily peak. A mid-to-high tide window maximizes depth and riding area within the interior flatwater lagoon.
