Reportedly over 300 windy days a year — genuinely one of the most reliable kite spots anywhere, 30-40 minutes from Mérida. NE thermal wind most afternoons, with winter 'Norte' fronts pushing it to 30kt. Steady enough that it draws freestylers and total beginners alike.

Good to know

Getting thereFly into Mérida (MID) and drive north about 35 minutes on Highway 261 to Progreso. A car is convenient but local buses run constantly from Mérida; free parking along the oceanfront malecón or side streets. The western end of the beach, away from the cruise pier, is the best launch.
HazardsThe main hazard is the roughly 6.5km cruise ship pier, which creates real wind shadows and turbulent current downwind of it — stay well clear depending on wind direction. Avoid the concrete breakwaters near downtown. Watch for onshore chop and stingrays in the shallow flats.
Best time of day2-6pm, February-September, when Yucatán heat drives a strong sea-breeze thermal to 18-25kt. Late afternoon is the most reliably clean wind of the day.
