A Vendée beach town with a long, gently sloping strand — reliably windy summer afternoons and easy enough for a first downwinder toward Le Veillon.

Getting thereLe Veillon beach, about 1 hour south of La Roche-sur-Yon or 1.5 hours from Nantes Airport. A car is mandatory; free parking in the large pine forest public lot at Plage du Veillon. Launch is on the ocean side or inside the protected river estuary lagoon depending on the tide.
HazardsThe river mouth creates real tidal current that can pull a kiter out to sea or into navigation channels quickly. Avoid the river current at mid-tide if less experienced, and watch for sharp rocks flanking the beach's western point.
Best time of dayTwo hours around high tide, filling the flatwater estuary lagoon with safe depth over the sandbars. Afternoon sessions take advantage of the local sea breeze building against the Vendée coast.
