Good to know

Getting thereGuanajuato, about 45 minutes north of Morelia Airport (MLM) via Highway 43. A car is necessary; free parking near the local crater lake parks or boat launch docks along the northern malecon. Staging is limited to narrow grassy clearings or muddy banks.
HazardsComplex mountain topography causes real, sudden wind shifts and gust pockets close to shore. Launch and landing space is tightly constrained by local fishing nets, lakeside trees, and concrete retaining walls — genuinely challenging for true beginners, no public rescue infrastructure.
Best time of dayAfternoon, when clear days trigger a localized thermal over the dark valley slopes. Early afternoon gives the most reliable wind before surrounding hills create turbulent shadows later in the evening.
