Getting thereAbout 45 minutes south of Guadalajara International Airport (GDL) via Highway 23. A car is required for the massive lake perimeter; free parking along the Ajijic or Chapala town boardwalks (malecones). Access is through narrow gravel clearings or local park banks.
HazardsHighly variable water levels reveal hidden rocks, mudflats, and thick floating water hyacinth mats that can tangle lines and catch foils. No localized rescue infrastructure — expect genuinely turbulent, gusty conditions close to the mountain ridges.
Best time of dayAfternoon, when regional wind gets a thermal boost across the lake basin during the dry spring months. Early afternoon is most reliable before mountain thermal drawing turns the breeze gusty near the shores.
