Getting thereAbout 2 hours southwest of Mexico City via the Toluca highway. A car is completely mandatory for this mountain town; paid and free parking near local nautical clubs or the public docks at Santa María. Staging is limited to authorized club lawns or narrow rocky clearings depending on water level.
HazardsSitting above 6,000 feet, surrounded by steep volcanic topography that causes real, sudden wind shifts and gust pockets close to shore. Launch and landing space is tightly constrained by private docks and boat traffic — genuinely challenging for true beginners, with no public rescue boats.
Best time of dayAfternoon, February-June, when clear days trigger a localized thermal over the dark mountain valley slopes. Wait until early afternoon for the thermal to stabilize across the main basins before rigging.
