One of the Atlantic coast's classic surf towns, with beach breaks that turn a kite session into wave-riding practice whenever a west swell is running.

Good to know

Getting thereSilver coast of Gironde, about 50 minutes west of Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport (BOD) via the D1215. A car is mandatory for heavy gear; free parking along Boulevard de la Plage or behind the central dunes. The wide open beaches at Lacanau Océan give direct entry.
HazardsOpen Atlantic exposure means a real, heavy shorebreak and rip current that can drain energy fast. True beginners should avoid this open beach entirely — deep water starts instantly and a kite malfunction can wash you into a genuinely dangerous surf lineup with no public rescue boats.
Best time of dayAfternoon, May-September, when daytime heating over the mainland draws a clean, consistent NW thermal sea breeze. Stabilizes after 2pm for a steady cross-onshore breeze that clears the nearshore surf line.
