Getting thereLes Huttes, northern tip of Île d'Oléron, roughly 1.5 hours from La Rochelle Airport via the main bridge. A car is required; free parking in the public lot behind the dunes. The path from the surf school shack leads directly to the beach.
HazardsA massive tidal range exposes a sharp, rocky reef shelf at low tide, making riding both impossible and genuinely dangerous for fins then. Time your launch precisely for mid-to-high tide and be ready for a powerful Atlantic shorebreak and real lateral current.
Best time of dayThree hours either side of high tide, for enough depth to clear the rocks underneath. Afternoon sessions are best when NW wind is reinforced by daytime thermal heating along the coast.
