Good to know

Getting thereLa Couarde (Plage du Peu Ragot) or Les Portes (Plage du Grouin) on Île de Ré, roughly 45 minutes from La Rochelle Airport across the toll bridge. A car is necessary; free and paid parking behind the dunes. Marked entry paths near the local sailing clubs give the cleanest access.
HazardsStrong tidal current funnels through the Pertuis sea channels, and low tide reveals hidden oyster beds and stone fish traps. Respect the summer municipal beach channels strictly — riding inside the crowded swimmer zones carries real fines here, not just a warning.
Best time of dayMid-to-high tide — low tide empties the bays and exposes dangerous rocky mudflats. Afternoon sessions work best when the NW Atlantic sea breeze combines with thermal gradients for steady onshore conditions.
