Getting thereOn the Wash in Norfolk, England, easily found via the A149 from King's Lynn โ the town has essentially one beach that runs alongside it. Pay-and-display parking is available at the promenade car park, or join Hunstanton Sailing Club for their facilities.
HazardsA genuinely large tidal range defines this spot: at low-to-mid tide, sandbars emerge and the water goes butter-flat, ideal for learning. As the tide rises toward high water, the beach can vanish entirely and water washes against a 4m sea wall between wooden groynes โ a real hazard, not just an inconvenience, and the time to pack up and move to Old Hunstanton (which has no sea wall). Mussel beds toward the cliff end are exposed at low tide; avoid launching between the groynes.
Best time of dayWind works from SSW through W to N, giving a wide usable range. Check tide tables at easytide.ukho.gov.uk before heading out โ setting up and launching isn't possible at high tide, and spring tides create the widest, flattest sandbar conditions.
