Good to know

Getting thereThe largest natural lake in France, about 1 hour northwest of Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport (BOD). A car is essential; free parking in the pine forest lots at Lachanau, Maubuisson, or Hourtin Port. Hourtin Plage's grassy and sandy banks give the primary rigging access.
HazardsVast shallow sand shelves are genuinely beginner-friendly, but hydrofoils will strike bottom close to shore. Watch for hidden submerged pine logs, and stay strictly within the marked wind sports zones — summer swimming-season fines here are real, not just posted signage.
Best time of dayAfternoon, when regional W or NW winds blow cleanly across the open lake with a slight thermal boost from the hot pine forests. Summer afternoons give the most predictable side-onshore conditions.
