Getting thereFly into Cancún (CUN), drive 2 hours north to Chiquilá, leave your car in a guarded paid lot ($5-10/day), and take the 20-minute ferry to Holbox. Cars are banned on the island — hire a golf cart taxi or walk. The main launch is Playa Punta Mosquito, at the northernmost hotel-zone tip.
HazardsThis sits inside a strict ecological marine reserve — kiters are barred from the designated flamingo and bird-nesting sandbars, not a rule to test. No motorized rescue services, and walking back along the sand spit if you drift can take hours. Shifting sandbars can create sudden ankle-deep spots at low tide.
Best time of dayLate morning through afternoon, as the thermal builds over the warm gulf water. A rising mid-tide covers the sand flats with just enough water for easy launching and riding.
