WaterFlat lagoon
A large saltwater lagoon behind Sète, sheltered from the open Mediterranean swell — flatter and calmer than Sète's sea-facing breakwaters, with the same Tramontane filling in.

Getting thereAbout 40 minutes southwest of Montpellier Airport (MPL) via the A9. A car is necessary; free and paid public dirt lots sit right next to the water at the primary launch points, Pont Levis (Sète) or Marseillan. Access is easiest via the designated wind sports zones marked off the main lagoon roads.
HazardsExtensive commercial oyster and mussel beds are flanked by sharp iron pickets — a real physical hazard if you drift downwind. Shallow margins are beginner-friendly, but watch for underwater metal stakes and old stone walls near shore, and strictly avoid the active navigation channels.
Best time of dayAfternoon, when the regional Tramontane (NW) or Marin (SE) winds get a thermal boost over the surrounding hills. Early afternoon gives the cleanest conditions before the water gets choppy across the large open basin.
