Good to know

Getting thereFly into Cap Skirring (CSK) or Ziguinchor (ZIG), then drive to Elinkine fishing village. From Elinkine, leave your car at the guarded port lot (small daily fee) and take a 30-minute pirogue ferry to Carabane Island β€” no cars or roads on the island itself, so access is on foot from the main pier.
HazardsThe Casamance River mouth has significant tidal current and changing sandbar depths. No official rescue boats or organized kite schools on this island β€” self-sufficiency is genuinely required. Watch for submerged mangrove roots near the channel edges and occasional fishing nets.
Best time of dayAfternoon, February-May, when the thermal sea breeze combines with trade winds for stable side-on conditions. Riding during slack tide minimizes the influence of the heavier river currents.
