Getting thereFly into Cancún (CUN) and drive about 45 minutes north past the downtown ferry ports on an unpaved, pothole-heavy dirt road — a high-clearance car helps. Reaching the main shallow lagoon means passing through private beach clubs like Ikarus Kiteboarding, which charge a small day-use parking fee. These clubs provide the only secure parking and direct lagoon access.
HazardsThe lagoon (Chacmuchuc/Chacmochuk) is genuinely home to a large crocodile population, well-documented by visitors and locals — this isn't an exaggeration. The practical risk is specifically tied to the deeper mangrove channels, not the main open flats where kiting actually happens: stay in the open flats and don't drift downwind into the mangroves, where the mud and roots make it hard to get back out anyway. Kite schools here run with real safety infrastructure precisely because of the shallow, controlled nature of the open riding area.
Best time of dayAll day during winter/spring 'Nortes' cold fronts (November-April), blowing cleanly across the open lagoon. Non-tidal; mornings give the glassiest, flattest water.
