A huge tidal bay on France's Atlantic coast, sheltered from ocean swell by the dune of Pilat — flat, shallow, and one of the most reliable beginner spots on the west coast.

Getting thereParking sits right at the beach (Arbousiers, on the west side of Arcachon town facing the bay). Gets genuinely saturated on summer days — arrive early.
HazardsKiting here is governed by a specific municipal decree (arrêté n°514) — a designated navigation channel is set up for the summer season, and kiting outside it is prohibited during that period; check current signage on-site. At high tide there's real current, more chop, and many moored boats to navigate around — better suited to experienced riders in those conditions. The stone breakwater sits close to the launch, so keep clear of it, especially at high tide when there's less room to work with.
Best time of dayLow tide is the better call, not just the safer one — the sandbanks trap water into small, sheltered pools with much weaker current, good for progression. Works on the NW-W thermal wind channeled through the bay.
