Getting thereFly into Djerba-Zarzis (DJE) and drive south across the ancient Roman causeway for about 50 minutes to the Zarzis oasis coast. A car is recommended for this rural southern region; free parking along unpaved sand tracks behind Lella Maryem public beach. Wide, undeveloped dunes give plenty of space to lay out gear.
HazardsSharp shell beds and scattered rocky patches underwater can cause foot injuries without booties. There are no organized kite centers or rescue boats in this remote area — real self-sufficiency and solid upwind riding skills are needed. Shifting offshore sandbanks can create deceptive deep-water channels further out.
Best time of dayAfternoon, April-September, when the Sahara thermal draw pulls maritime wind side-onshore. Mid-to-high tide gives ample depth over the shallow coastal sandbars.
