Getting thereFly into Cape Town (CPT) and drive east along the N2 for roughly 3 hours to the Witsand turnoff. A car is essential for this rural river-mouth destination; free parking at the main public slipway and beach lot. Best access is the wide sandy beach at the Breede River mouth.
HazardsThe Breede River mouth has real tidal current that can separate a crashed rider from their board. The river is a well-documented home to some of the largest recorded bull (Zambezi) sharks anywhere β no kitesurfer has ever been attacked here despite decades of shark presence, but experienced locals still avoid extended body-dragging as standard practice. Solid upwind riding skills matter for staying in the shallow zones. Sand bars can create sudden shallow spots at low tide.
Best time of dayAfternoon, when the dominant summer southeasterly blows clean and side-shore across the river. Plan for an incoming tide, which opposes the wind direction to create flat lagoons behind the sandbars.
