Getting thereFalse Bay coast, about 30 minutes south of Cape Town city center or airport. A car helps for gear, though it's accessible by public transit; extensive free parking along the beachfront promenade. The stretch known as Sunrise Beach gives the cleanest launch, away from the surfers.
HazardsExpect a real, heavy shorebreak and rip current that can make body-dragging genuinely challenging. False Bay is an active Great White Shark habitat, confirmed directly against peer-reviewed research and the official Shark Spotters program itself — a real, actively-staffed operation at this exact beach (8am-6pm, year-round). Learn the flag system before you go in: green means clear, black means spotting conditions are too poor to see anything (not the same as safe — the one documented attack at this beach happened during a black flag, when someone went in outside the monitored zone), white means a shark's been spotted, red is high alert. Heavy crowds of beginner surfers in the shallows are a factor too.
Best time of dayAfternoon, when the summer South-Easter blows cleanly cross-onshore into the bay. Wind typically increases post-midday as inland valleys heat up, helping clear the heaviest surf lineups from the kiting zone.
