Good to know

Getting thereAbout 1.5 hours southeast of Cape Town International Airport (CPT) via the N2 and R43. A car is required; free parking at the Grotto Beach lot or the adjacent lagoon mouth tracks. Grassy and sandy banks inside the estuary mouth are the standard staging ground.
HazardsShifting sandbars, hidden reeds, and variable depth that change with whether the river mouth is naturally open or closed. Watch for sudden wind shadows near tree-lined banks, and real tidal current when the estuary is actively draining.
Best time of dayAfternoon, as the summer thermal accelerates the coastal cross-onshore flow. Time sessions with mid-to-high tide if the mouth is open, for enough depth over the inside sand spit.
