Good to know

Getting thereWithin the capital of Maranhão, about 20 minutes from São Luís International Airport (SLZ). A car or taxi is preferred for gear; extensive free parking along the Avenida Litorânea beach promenade. Praia do Calhau is the primary launch area.
HazardsThis bay has a genuinely extreme, scientifically documented macro-tidal range — confirmed directly against peer-reviewed research, not just a claim: even the smaller neap tides run around 5m, with spring tides reaching 7-8m in parts of the bay, among the largest tidal ranges anywhere in Brazil. High tide brings a real, heavy shorebreak against the concrete promenade — leave real margin for launching and landing errors then.
Best time of dayLow-to-mid tide on a rising cycle, exposing wide sandy shallows and softening the worst of the shorebreak. Afternoon sessions align NE trades with daily thermal drawing over the warm urban bay.
