Getting thereSouthwestern tip of Sicily near Campobello di Mazara, about 1 hour from Trapani Birgi Airport (TPS) or 1.5 hours from Palermo (PMO). A car is absolutely required for the coastal agricultural roads; free parking directly on the gravel and sand behind the local surf village. The open sandy cove next to the reef point break is the main access.
HazardsA sharp, shallow volcanic rock reef runs parallel to the shore โ a real hazard for fins and foils at low tide. Solid upwind skills matter to avoid getting dragged onto the sharp rocks flanking the bay during intense winter storms.
Best time of dayThe wind picture here is genuinely more layered than a single direction, confirmed directly against detailed local wind guides: Maestrale (NW) and Ponente (W) are the primary wave-producing winds, running side to side-offshore; Scirocco (SE) is a separate, distinct wind that also works but produces side-onshore conditions instead โ these are two different wind systems, not variants of the same one. Autumn and winter bring the biggest, most consistent waves; summer offers lighter thermal breezes.
