Getting thereExtreme southern point of Sal island, 5 minutes by car or a 20-minute walk south from Santa Maria town center. A car or taxi is needed for equipment; free dirt parking along tracks parallel to the dunes. The vast beach near the local surf hotels gives completely unobstructed access.
HazardsWind blows strictly cross-offshore or offshore near the point — genuinely capable of dragging tired riders or broken gear straight into the deep Atlantic. Never ride here without a pre-arranged safety rescue boat contract, and stay outside the high-density swimmer zones near the central piers.
Best time of dayMid-morning through afternoon, winter trade wind season (November-April). Arriving by mid-morning gets the most stable wind and beach space before midday heat brings slight turbulence.
