Good to know

Getting thereAbout 1h15 north of Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) via the A8. A car is required; free parking on the northern side at Foz do Arelho or the southern side near Bom Sucesso beach. The wide tidal sandbanks inside the lagoon mouth are the best rigging zones.
HazardsThe narrow channel connecting the lagoon to the Atlantic generates genuinely violent tidal current that can sweep a rider or gear out to sea or into the sandbanks. Stay well inside the flat upper basin, away from the ocean mouth, to avoid these currents and the deep-water drop-offs there.
Best time of dayAfternoon, June-September, when the Portuguese 'Nortada' (NW wind) gets amplified by strong thermal heating over land. Time sessions with a rising mid-tide for the safest depth over the inside sandbanks while avoiding the worst of the outgoing tidal race.
