Getting thereFly into Fortaleza (FOR), then a 2.5-hour drive northwest via CE-085 to Mundaú. A car is recommended; a local beach ferry crosses the river mouth to reach the flatwater lagoon area. Parking generally free along the sand tracks and beachfront pousadas near the river mouth.
HazardsWind inside the river mouth and northern tip of the bay turns gusty and side-offshore/offshore, which can pull unaware riders away from safe launch zones. Beginners should stay within the protected river lagoon or head downwind where the wind cleans up, avoiding the open sea where currents dominate. Watch for fishing rafts (jangadas) and shifting sandbars.
Best time of dayAfternoon, when trade winds peak with regional thermal acceleration. The downwind sections of the lagoon offer the most consistent, stable wind away from the gusty river bluffs.
