Getting thereNorthwestern Peru, about 1.5 hours north of Talara Airport (TYL) or 2 hours south of Tumbes (TBP) via the Pan-American Highway. A car or local moto-taxi is required for gear; free parking on the unpaved sand tracks behind beachfront hostels. Pocitas or the main town break give direct access.
HazardsGenuinely crowded, with beginner surfers, swimmers, and local fishing boats packed into a narrow nearshore reef zone. Competent upwind steering matters to avoid drifting into concrete hotel seawalls downwind — watch for exposed rocks at low tide near the main point.
Best time of dayAfternoon, July-January, when equatorial trades blow cleanly cross-shore with intense local thermal building. Stabilizes after 1pm for a consistent breeze that clears the nearshore surf line.
