Getting thereA historic oil-mining settlement, about 20 minutes north of Talara Airport (TYL) via unpaved desert dirt roads. A high-clearance vehicle is completely mandatory for the rugged terrain; free off-road parking on the bluffs overlooking the point. The sandy bay below the old military docks is the primary launch.
HazardsA high-intensity point break with real lateral undercurrent, plus old rusted offshore oil platforms that present genuine collision hazards. True beginners should avoid this wild beach — wind blows 25-35kt, deep water starts close to the point, and there's no organized rescue service on site.
Best time of dayAfternoon, when desert heat combines with the permanent Pacific trades for real, relentless consistency. Post-midday gives the thermal time to fill the bay completely, along clean left-hand wave lines.
