Getting therePuerto Malabrigo, about 1.5 hours north of Trujillo Airport (TRU) via the Pan-American Highway and rural sugar cane roads. A car is needed for the coast; free parking along dirt tracks or at beachfront surf hotels. The wide beach below the high desert bluffs is the primary access.
HazardsThis is genuinely the longest left-hand wave in the world, confirmed directly and consistently across many sources — rides regularly run 1-2.2km, occasionally longer, taking 3-4 minutes top to bottom. A real, ferocious current acts like a conveyor belt pulling riders downwind along the point. True beginners should avoid launching here entirely — deep water starts instantly and you'll face a genuinely committed crowd of surfers in the primary lineup.
Best time of dayAfternoon, when the regional wind gets reinforced by a strong thermal off the coastal dunes. After 1pm gives the sea breeze time to fill in cleanly past the outer headlands, for steady cross-offshore tracking across perfectly organized wave lines.
