Getting thereEast coast of Zanzibar, about 1 hour from the airport and Stone Town. A car or taxi transfer is necessary; parking at public beach access points or resort lots. The wide sandy strip in front of the major diving and kiteboarding shacks is the primary launch.
HazardsAt low tide the whole lagoon drains, exposing reef shelves packed with sea urchins. Know the local tide charts, wear booties, and watch for traditional fishing dhows anchored close to shore at high water.
Best time of dayHigh tide on a rising cycle, for at least 1.5m of depth over the shallow coral heads inside the reef. The Kusi monsoon (June-September) blows side-onshore for the most consistent afternoon conditions.
