Getting thereFly into Zanzibar's Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) and hire a taxi or drive a rental car east roughly 1 hour to Jambiani village. A car helps but isn't strictly needed since hotels sit directly on the spot; free parking at most beachfront lodges. Best access is straight off the main sandy beach behind the village reefs.
HazardsAn expansive coral reef lines the entire coast, creating a shallow lagoon that dries out completely or exposes sharp coral heads, sea urchins, and seaweed-farming sticks at low tide. Wear protective footwear and avoid riding near low tide, when there's no depth for safety. The outer reef break has large waves and strong currents needing advanced riding skills.
Best time of dayMid-to-high tide is the only viable window — the lagoon is unrideable at low tide. Best wind reliability comes in the afternoon when the Kusi (June-September) or Kaskazi (December-March) monsoon trades lock in.
