Getting thereAbout 50 minutes west of Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) via the N2. A car is required to move between the various world-famous surf breaks; free beachfront parking at Main Beach or Dolphin Beach. Dolphin Beach gives the cleanest launch away from the main rocky surf points.
HazardsA world-class, high-intensity surf zone with a genuinely brutal shorebreak, fast point-break current, and sharp mussel-covered rocks. True beginners should avoid launching near the main points like Supertubes entirely — deep water starts instantly, the area is a well-documented active shark habitat (this stretch of coast, including a notable incident during a professional competition here), and a gear malfunction washes you directly into jagged rocks with no rescue support.
Best time of dayAfternoon, when regional SW or E winds get thermally accelerated along the coast. Late afternoon gives the cleanest wind tracks and helps blow the heaviest surf lineups clear of the kiting zone.
