Good to know

Getting thereWest of Jericoacoara, requiring a 4x4 beach buggy ride across the dunes and a short traditional wooden car ferry across the Guriú River mouth. No paved roads — access is strictly off-road, with parking directly on the river sandbars. The wide tidal flat near the mangrove mouth is the primary launch.
HazardsPowerful river current changes rapidly with the ocean tide, alongside hidden mangrove roots on the upwind banks. Watch for shallow water over the sandbanks at low tide, and avoid getting pulled into the deep, turbulent river mouth channel.
Best time of dayHigh tide on a rising cycle, filling the flat mangrove arms with clean, waist-deep water over the shallowest sand shelves. Afternoon sessions take advantage of trade winds thermally accelerated across the hot coastal dunes.
