Good to know

Getting thereFly into Natal (NAT), drive south about 1.5 hours via BR-101 to Canguaretama, then follow signs to Barra do Cunhaú. A car is recommended; free parking right on the river beach near the local ferry crossing. Best access is the sandy spit adjacent to the lagoon system.
HazardsStrong tidal currents pull through the river mouth where the lagoon meets the Atlantic. Stay clear of the immediate river channel, where current can rapidly drag a kiter downwind — stick to the wide, shallow standing-depth areas of the lagoon instead. Watch for local boat traffic including small ferries and fishing vessels crossing the channel.
Best time of dayAfternoon, as easterly trade winds build to 14-22kt for reliable side-onshore conditions ocean-side. A rising mid-tide gives the best balance of flat water inside the lagoon without exposing the muddy banks.
