An end-of-the-road village on the edge of the Lençóis Maranhenses dune fields, reachable only by boat or 4x4 — remote even by this coastline's standards.

Getting thereEdge of the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park — a 4-hour drive from São Luís Airport (SLZ) to Barreirinhas, then a 1-hour public or private 4x4 boat transfer down the river. No paved roads exist in Atins; transit is purely 4x4 on deep sand, staging directly from the sand flats where the Rio Preguiças meets the ocean.
HazardsThe massive river estuary generates genuinely violent tidal current and shifting sandbars that can confuse an inexperienced rider. The vast waist-deep flats are forgiving, but there's real no localized rescue infrastructure — stay clear of active local boat lanes.
Best time of dayAfternoon, July-December, when steady trades curve smoothly cross-onshore with intense local thermal building. Mid-to-high tide gives clean depth over the extensive safety sandbanks.
