WaterFlat (shallow lake)
One of the IJsselmeer's best-known kite towns, with kilometres of shallow, flat water that barely gets above waist-deep a long way out from shore.

Getting thereOn the IJsselmeer in Friesland, about 1h15 north of Amsterdam via the Afsluitdijk (A7). A car is required; ample paid parking at the Strand Workum municipal lot right behind the dyke, with a well-organized grassy lawn and adjacent sandy beach.
HazardsA vast, knee-deep standing area for several hundred meters is very safe but a real flipping hazard for hydrofoils. Strict local zoning separates kitesurfers from crowded swimmer and windsurf zones, especially in peak summer.
Best time of dayAfternoon, when W and SW winds blow cleanly across the open lake with a slight thermal boost from the warm inland fields. Arrive early on summer weekends to secure parking before the local crowd fills the beach.
