Getting thereFly into Reno-Tahoe (RNO) and drive about 25 minutes south via I-580 to Washoe Lake State Park. A car is mandatory; parking at the Main Day Use Area or East Lake launch requires a Nevada State Parks vehicle fee (roughly $5-10). The Main Day Use area on the west side has the cleanest rigging lawn and easiest sandy access.
HazardsHigh altitude (over 5,000ft) thins the air and reduces kite power — size up your gear accordingly. The surrounding Sierra Nevada creates genuinely gusty, turbulent wind with unpredictable shifts. Water levels can drop a lot in drought years, exposing hidden mudbanks and old fence posts.
Best time of day1-5pm, spring through late summer, when desert thermal heating combines with the local 'Washoe Zephyr' pulling wind over the ridges. Non-tidal, but check local water level reports before heading out.
