Getting thereAbout 30 minutes north of Santa Cruz or 1.5 hours south of San Francisco along Highway 1. A car is necessary for this remote state beach; free dirt-shoulder parking along the highway. The wide beach in front of the creek mouth is the primary entry.
HazardsA world-class, high-intensity wave spot with a massive Pacific shorebreak, freezing water, and powerful rip currents. Genuinely not for true beginners — wind blows 25-35kt, deep water starts instantly, and this is active Great White Shark habitat with no rescue infrastructure.
Best time of dayAfternoon, April-August, when the Central Valley thermal engine accelerates prevailing NW winds along the cliffs. Late afternoon gives the most powerful, consistent wind and cleanest wave faces.
