Called "the Tarifa of the USA" by local instructors, and for good reason β€” this is regularly rated the best winter kitesurfing in the country, with one of the largest, friendliest kite communities anywhere in Florida. Shallow, sandbar-protected water makes it especially forgiving for beginners. Watch for oyster shells on the bottom β€” wear boots.

Good to know

Getting thereTampa International (TPA), then south about 30 minutes on I-275 onto the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. A car is mandatory; access is via the Skyway North Rest Area beach tracks. Parking is free, but FDOT enforces gate-closure hours requiring vehicles clear the area by sunset.
HazardsMain hazards are the massive bridge pilings and heavy commercial shipping lanes flanking the riding zone. Tidal currents between the pilings are genuinely powerful, sharp oyster shells and highway rock line the shore, and the water drops into a deep channel quickly. Thick neoprene booties are worth wearing here.
Best time of dayAll day during winter/spring frontal changes β€” the peninsula shape makes it rideable in almost any wind direction. Afternoon sessions get the cleanest air when a thermal sea breeze reinforces an E or W forecast.
