One of the most consistently windy kite towns in the US β genuinely rideable wind nearly every day of the year on the flats side of the island, away from the Gulf surf.

Getting thereBrownsville/South Padre Island (BRO) or Valley International (HRL) in Harlingen, then north across the Queen Isabella Causeway. A car is required; 'South Flats' just north of the convention center is the main access, with free parking on the hard-packed sand tracks alongside the lagoon.
HazardsThe shallow lagoon floor extends for miles and hides stingrays β shuffle your feet rather than stepping normally. At extreme low tide the water can drop below knee-deep, raising the risk of hard impacts on the bottom. A few isolated wind shadows come from shoreline structures.
Best time of dayLate morning through afternoon, when SE trade winds combine with thermal acceleration. Rideable across all tides, but mid-to-high tide is most comfortable for freestyle and twintip riding.
