Good to know

Getting thereAcross the bay from Santander, about 20 minutes from Santander Airport (SDR) via the S-10 and CA-141. A car is needed for gear; large paid and free parking behind the beachfront dunes. The wide stretch near the Miera estuary mouth is the primary, unobstructed launch.
HazardsThe estuary mouth generates genuinely violent tidal current and shifting sandbars that can sweep a rider into the open Cantabrian Sea. Stay well clear of the deep navigation channels used by local ferries, and watch for heavy concentrations of beginner surfers in the shallows.
Best time of dayAfternoon, when regional N or NW frontal wind blows completely unobstructed across the Bay of Biscay. Summer afternoons are predictable when frontal wind gets a slight thermal boost from the warm inland Spanish fields.
