A narrow sand spit between San Diego Bay and the open Pacific, giving a choice of flatter bay water or more exposed ocean-side conditions depending on which side you launch from.

Getting thereAlong the narrow spit connecting Coronado to Imperial Beach, about 20 minutes south of San Diego International Airport (SAN) via Highway 75. A car is required; Silver Strand State Beach paid municipal lots. Stages split between the wave-facing ocean side and the flat-water Crown Cove lagoon side.
HazardsThe ocean side has real shorebreak, undercurrents, and military training exercises offshore to avoid. Crown Cove is genuinely beginner-friendly, but watch for strict seasonal bird sanctuary zoning and tight public swimming enclosures.
Best time of dayAfternoon, when the standard SoCal thermal sea breeze builds from the WNW β steady side-onshore, notably better than the calm mornings.
