Alpine wind with a name: the Maloja, a thermal that pours down from the pass most summer afternoons onto a lake ringed by 3,000m peaks.

Getting thereDrive through Silvaplana village and down to the Sportzentrum Mulets parking lot โ straightforward with GPS. Camping is right next to the spot if you want to stay; hotels are available in the village too. The Mulets restaurant right at the spot is the local favorite for food.
HazardsLaunch only from the official point at the very top of the spot โ you can land anywhere. Recent complaints about people ignoring the shore protection zones have put the spot at genuine risk of closure, so take the CHF 10 summer fee and the rules seriously. Expect around 100 kiters on the water on a good summer day โ gather your lines and rest the bar on your kite when you land, since crowding here makes courtesy matter. Water temp swings hard: up to ~15ยฐC in high summer, but can drop to ~3ยฐC in May/June and September/October. Avoid the Julier wind entirely in summer, and only consider it in winter under very good conditions โ it's consistently gusty here.
Best time of daySummer runs on a reliable thermal called the Maloja, blowing roughly mid-February through end of October, usually starting 11am-2pm and running until 5-8pm. A genuinely useful forecast trick: check the forecast at 2pm โ good weather plus a 4-10kt SW reading there means roughly 95% odds of real Maloja wind showing up. December and January are rarely worth the trip.
